What is Interim Management?
After a start in the mid 90's Interim Management has now become an established and powerful additional management resource to bring about:
- Change and improvement. (Interims are extensively used in the Public Sector to bring about and drive change)
- To manage and drive projects and programmes.
- Cover gaps though sickness, leave of absence or sudden departure.
- Where there is an uncertain future, for example in the case of mergers, acquistions or a potential sale of the business in prospect and it is not appropriate to appoint someone permanently.
- Business development and the launch of new products.
- Turnaround where the company faces an uncertain financial future.
Interim Managers are very experienced and therefore add value from day one.
They form part of the managment team normally heading up a function.
The important difference between Interim managers and Consultants is that Interims implement solutions whereas Consultants normally only advise.
Interim managers operate through Limited companies and are paid a day rate for their services.
They are not employees and are responsible for their own PAYE, NHI, Pension, Car and other taxes and are only paid for the days worked.
They are normally contracted for a period of months, the average being six - nine months, but some assignments can last years. (One of our members recently completed a four year assignment, on various projects, at a Water Utility!)
Involvement is normally full time but also can be part-time depending on the project requrements. (One of our members recently concluded an eight month assignment, implementing a warehouse management system, three days per week. This suited the company timescales and helped with the project budget)
There are no employment contracts to set up or unwind and because they are not employees no redundancy payments to make.
Interims therefore provide a fully flexible resouce of experienced interim mangers, engaged only for as long as required to complete the assignment objectives.
